The "league" season was divided into two. The first league required each team to play 18 games against local opposition (Sunderland's opponents are highlighted) up until 25th December. The second league, from 26th December to 1st May, was less formalised, with cup qualifiers and regional cup fixtures doubling as league matches. War Cup qualification consisted of 10 games against local opposition (highlighted). A separate table across all the "northern" teams was then compiled counting only the 10 qualifying games, and the top 32 teams in this table went forward to the knock-out stages, Sunderland failing to qualify.
