  This was a benefit match for the widow of Harry Low who had died aged only 38 the previous September. The Sunderland team were a "past and present" XI, with several of Low's colleagues from the successful 1913 team turning out. The opposition, managed by Frank Watt, the then Newcastle manager, where officially called "Mr. Watt's XI"; their clubs were: Hoffman, Maitland, Wilson, Woods and, Hawes (South Shields), McCracken, McIntosh, Curry, Aitken and McDonald (Newcastle), Elliott (Middlesbrough).
