A much bigger crowd for this semi-final was expected. However only 200 Sunderland fans made the trip (compared to 2,000 Villa) because of the early departure time of the excursion from the North-East, together with very high admission charges (1s minimum up to 7s 6d) and a 4pm kick off time.
