Dominic Matteo was a deadline day loan signing from Liverpool. However the club's administrators failed to fax the registration forms through to the League headquarters, and as a result were charged a week later with fielding an ineligible player. Luckily the club were fined £2,500 and not deducted points; Matteo had to return to Liverpool. The shambles saw the end of Mick Buxton's reign and the arrival of Peter Reid.
