Sunderland lost Hastings to injury with the score at 1-1, and went ahead whilst still down to 10. Hastings returned to hobble on the left wing with the forwards reorganising their positions; the makeshift formation yielded 5 goals! Bobby Gurney is generally credited with 5 goals in this game (only three other players achieved this), due to the fifth Sunderland goal being credited to him in the Saturday Football Echo report. However, in the dressing room afterwards it was admitted that though it looked like Gurney's shot would have made it into the net off the goalkeeper's legs, Alex Hastings put the ball over the line. Alex Hastings always said it was Gurney's goal, so we go with that.
