This turned out to be the last time Roker Park witnessed Sunderland playing in a major European competition. Some sources credit Bobby Kerr's goal as an own goal for Sporting keeper Damas. The confusion arises becauses Kerr's on target shot was caught by Damas, but the keeper the went backwards with it and carried the ball over the line. Sporting were only able to name 3 subs as 3 of their squad were sent home after being convicted and fined £20 each for shoplifting audio cassettes from Boots in Newcastle's Northumberland Street!
