Newcastle West End
Tyne-Wear rivalry very much apparent even in these early days: "The crowd was very noisy but one cannot help remarking that supporters would do well to remember that a football match is a game and not a war in which it is necessary to urge men to do each other bodily harm. This is what a large section of the crowd were doing whilst their language was occasionally disgusting in the extreme. Those mainly responsible were mere lads and something will have to be done to check their behaviour. Few men of sense would be inclined to take their wives, sisters or sweethearts to one of these football matches on account of this vile language emanating from all sides of the ground. The lowest depths were reached at this game and as there is a law against the use of blasphemous and obscene language the West End committee should resist such disgraceful behaviour. A few extra police and a severe warning as to the intentions of those in authority would have a good effect.
