Sunderland
District XI
This charity match raised £45-13s-2d to split between Sunderland Infirmary and Monkwearmouth Dispensary. It was considered the largest crowd ever seen for a match in Sunderland to date.
Rev. Robinson Hindle (who selected and managed the District XI) was later to play a big part in getting Sunderland accepted into the Football League. The clubs of the selected players were as follows:
Smart, Crichton (Birtley), Hudson, Matthews, Hamilton (Shankhouse Black Watch), Wilkinson, Arnold (Durham University), Turpin (St Cuthberts), Oliver, Wardale (Gateshead), Dingle (St. Peters).
Allan was injured during the first half and Rooney was allowed to come on as a replacement for the second half.
