Sunderland disputed the first (not over the line) and second (offside) goals. Sunderland later formally complained that one of the umpires (Milburn of Stanley) had made unfair decisions, but their complaint was thrown out. Sunderland subsequently decided not to compete in the competition in 1885-86.
