Port Glasgow were the first team from beyond the North-East to play at Sunderland. The attendance was "very large, exceeding by far all previous attendances". The game was two periods of 40 minutes. For some reason McColl, usually a forward, was in goal at the start; after 3 Port Glasgow goals in quick succession, someone else (unknown, but at a guess Jack Kirtley, who had played there often) changed places with him. The changeover made little difference, Sunderland were chasing shadows all afternoon, the Scots playing more of a passing, team game than the home side were used to.
