A letter to the Sunderland Echo on the day of the match (from Aleck W. Hughes) indicates that Sunderland had been invited to play this match at Whitburn Cricket Club by the clubs secretary. The intention was to exhibit the association game to the club members, so that the club may establish it's own association football team; which happened shortly afterwards. The game was played in two 35 minute halves.
