Sunderland's first appearance in a national, first-class competition. Many history books have a slightly different SAFC line-up and also indicate one of the different players (McColl) scored the goal. However, the line-up shown is from published press reports, none of which provide the SAFC scorer. As this was Sunderland's first ever first class competitive game, the line-up has implications further down the line; some of the players who played (or didn't) never made another first class appearance, so it affects the ordinal number of all subsequent debuts, i.e. who is Sunderland's 100th, 500th, 1000th player, etc.!
