Bob Pryde missed a penalty in the 115th minute after Carter had palmed away a header. Bobby Gurney was clattered by the Blackburn keeper after only 3 minutes and carried off on a strectcher; he managed to return after 30 minutes, but struggled for the rest of the game. On return to Sunderland, Gurney was x-rayed and found to have fractured his right fibula 3 inches above the ankle!
